SPEEDSTERS, swingers and spinners all had a crack at getting wickets during the four Weber Cup cricket clashes played at the weekend.
Saturday’s action saw Empangeni Rugby Club walk over Village at Addison Park with an easy 163 run victory, while the Zululand Schools XI gave the Unizul XI students a 140 run hiding at the uMhlathuze Sports Complex.
The cricket lessons carried over on Sunday, when the Schools XI smashed Village by 156 runs at Addison Park.
A major upset was caused at the eShowe Sports Grounds when the home side managed to beat Richards Bay Rugby Club by one wicket in a cracker of a game.
Empangeni Rugby Club won the toss and elected to bat first on a batters’ paradise against Village.
Captain Eugene Zwart lead from the front smashing 152 runs before retiring to top score for the Empangeni side.
Louis Marx supported him with a superb innings of 61. Empangeni reached 322/4 in their allotted 45 overs.
Brandon Foxcroft 4/76 was the pick of the bowlers for Village.
He took his bowling form into bat and ended on 66. He was supported well by Hugo Myburgh with 23. But Mark Shorkend ripped the Village side apart with figures of 4/15 in 7 overs. Village managed 159 all out, handing the Empangeni side a comfortable 163 run victory.
The Zululand Schools XI won the toss and elected to bat on a dodgy pitch at the uMhlathuze Sports Complex on Saturday when taking on the Unizul XI.
Roland Fourie 74 and Trevor Kietzman 40 topped scored with the bat and helped their side to 228 all out. Vela Mjala 2/48 was the man who worked the magic with the ball for the students.
In reply, Unizul were bowled out for 88 runs, handing the Schools side an easy 140 run victory. Captain Thula Ngema 38 lead from the front, top scoring for his side after a good bowling performance. But Trevor ‘destruction’ Kietzman got figures of 5/12 in 8 overs which was the students’ Achilles’ heel.
Sunday
Sunday’s action saw Village catching another hiding at Addison Park, when the Zululand Schools XI beat them by 156 runs.
Village won the toss and elected to field first, but it was the Trevor Kietzman and Jason Redinger show. They scored 128 and 127 not out respectively, to help their team to 274/2.
Hennie Swart 1/23 and Riekert Myburgh 1/37 were the pick of the bowlers. Village managed 118 all out on a batting pitch, with Brandon Foxcroft 38 and Hennie Swart 22 not out, top scoring.
Trevor Kietzman 4/11 in 5 overs and Ryan Smith 1/4 in 4 overs put the nails in Village’s coffin.
The last game of the weekend saw a major upset, when eShowe beat Richards Bay Rugby Club by 1 wicket at the eShowe Sports Field.
eShowe won the toss and chose to field first, bowling the visitors out for 176 in 38 overs. Frans Groenewald top scored with 54 and Lloyd Walker 5/23 and Brett Schwikard 2/41 were top bowlers.
eShowe managed to reach 177/9 in the 42 nd over to claim a one wicket victory.
Rob Adams 41 and Brett Schwikard 53 helped eShowe over the line with Lazar Holmes 2/20 in 9 overs and Tyler Holmes 2/10 in 4 overs the top bowlers.
