A bonus from the shingles vaccine: Dementia protection?

I had a really bad case of shingles when I was ~8 or ~9 years old. And then again when I was ~14 or so. And then ~35/36. Then the vaccine came out and I had to convince doctors, no, really, I need this vaccine. And finally someone was kind enough to jab me with it. It's been several years...

Butch and Suni send mixed messages on whether politics delayed their return

Thank you for your response. While I can agree with most of what you're saying, this article doesn't even bother to wonder why the interviewed statements don't actually have any internal consistency. And perhaps wonder they might not be consistent? Given the current political environment, ala...

Butch and Suni send mixed messages on whether politics delayed their return

A-political is currently a political stance. In the same way that not stopping a lynching is a stance.

Butch and Suni send mixed messages on whether politics delayed their return

So, I gotta say this and I know it won't be super popular, but: Ars, why are we normalizing this? Why is the NYT, Ars, and every publication acting like the bootlicking dog and pony show is normal? It's obvious to anyone, literally anyone, with an IQ above room temperature, that these...

    RIP Gene Hackman

It's odd, but if it were murder-suicide, I'd wager most owners would protect the dog. It's the same kind of thinking that causes people to take off their shoes before leaping off a bridge.

You are not my lawyer, but what would you do? Ex signed in my name

During my divorce, I called my uncle--my best friend, basically--and was on the verge of insanity and anger because my ex wanted the coffee maker. I was livid. I was absolutely beside myself that she, who didn't drink coffee, would want to take the $30 coffee maker that I'd bought. My uncle...

H5N1 bird flu: Nevada dairy worker infected with newly spilled-over strain

If you live in the US, move to another country. The cult of death is going to try very hard to make sure as many people die from this as possible. The prudent move is to get as far away from them as possible.

Avian flu cases are on the upswing at big dairy farms

Cool cool cool cool cool cool cool. Not concerned at all. Cool cool. Since I saw the initial Ars reporting on this months ago, I've been slowly buying masks and the usual consumables that went away during our last pandemic. Nothing egregious, just a few extra here and a few extra there. I...

    Ninety-Nine Thousand Nine-Hundred Ninety-Nine, Plus One

Congrats! I've been here ~24 years now, and share the same sentiments and nostalgia. I only wish I'd registered when I'd first started lurking in '99ish. I hit 1k on my 10-year anniversary here--so apparently I just need to be here 1000 years in order to hit 100k. EASY. Stop posting now. I'll...

Bird flu hit a dead end in Missouri, but it’s running rampant in California

Satisfactory hits 1.0, removing your last excuse to avoid falling in deep

Must. Resist. Another. 1000 hours. Ah who am I kidding. Satisfactory will get me again, especially now that the recipes aren't likely to change anymore.

    Fight!!

In my mid-twenties, I was up at 2am in my office and I was programming. I heard a noise back behind the house--and then the sound of someone trying to steal the air conditioner sitting in the window of my office. I got up, went out the front door, around to the back of the house. I surprised the...

OpenAI signs AI deal with Condé Nast

Big oof on this one. I understand the reasoning, the inevitability, and the need for funding and revenue and all that. And also, it's a mistake, a big one, and I'd really hoped Ars would be better than this. I know Ars doesn't really have much autonomy anymore, but I think if this was a hill...

Civilization VII preview: A new age dawns for this decades-old 4X series

I've been playing since Civ II. Civ V is kind of my go-to, as I didn't really enjoy VI all that much. I'm not sure why, I just didn't put too much time into it and it didn't grab me the way V did. I'm still mildly on the fence about this one. I guess we'll see as more details are revealed.
