Law enforcement works together to keep the streets safe

Operation O Kae Molao sees law enforcement officers taking to the streets of Ekurhuleni.

The long weekend (December 14 to 16) saw law enforcement officers take to the streets in Operation O Kae Molao.

Members of the SAPS, Johannesburg Metro Police Department, Tshwane Metro Police Department, Gauteng Traffic Police, EMPD Speed Enforcement Unit, EMPD Public Order Policing Unit, EMPD Specialised Task Team and Benoni, Daveyton, Duduza, Nigel, KwaThema, Springs, Kingsway and Tsakane precinct officers were involved in the operation.

They nabbed 57 wrongdoers in the Alberton, Germiston, Olifantsfontein, Tsakane and Tembisa areas for excessive speeding and driving while intoxicated, as well as two people for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

In the Germiston and Alberton areas, the EMPD Speed Enforcement Unit arrested eight motorists, which included three on the N12 highway, direction east, near the R59 bridge, four on the N3 highway, direction south, near the Rand Airport off-ramp and one on the N3 highway, direction south, near the Grey Avenue off-ramp, between Saturday and Monday.

This Taurus revolver and live rounds of ammunition were confiscated by law enforcement officers over the long weekend during Operation O Kae Molao. The firearm was confiscated in Tembisa and two men were arrested.

All the arrested drivers caught were males, between the ages of 25 and 42 years, driving sedans, a minibus, a bakkie and motorcycles.

They all cited different reasons, like being late for work or rushing home, for speeding.

They were nabbed for clocking between 162km/h and 189km/h, and were charged with reckless and negligent driving, at the Germiston and Alberton police stations.

The officers also held roving roadblocks, between 11am and 3.30pm, on December 15 in Olifantsfontein and Tembisa.

Roads targeted were Madiba Drive, DM Marokane and the R562 road.

Two male drivers, aged 39 and 42 years, were arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and were taken to the Olifantsfontein Police Station.

Five discontinued notices for operating unroadworthy motor vehicles on a public road and 34 citations for moving violations, for example, not in possession of a valid driver’s licence, defects and failing to wear a safety belt, were also issued to offenders.

In the Tsakane area, 45 male and female motorists, between the ages of 32 and 50, were arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The operation in Tsakane took place on December 15 and 16 and took the form of roving roadblocks on Second, Zulu, Modjadji and Geluksdaal roads between 6pm and 2am.

Then, on December 16 at 3am, armed with information from concerned members of the community about two men brandishing a firearm in a public space, the EMPD Specialised Task Team raided a shack in the Tembisa area and the men were arrested.

The duo, aged 41 and 43 years, live in the Duduza informal settlement and were taken to the Ivory Park Police Station by the team, after a Taurus revolver with the serial numbers tampered with, and nine live rounds of ammunition were confiscated from them.

They are both facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

All the arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge, Germiston, Tembisa/Midrand and Tsakane magistrate’s courts soon.
