iPhone 8 and 8 Plus need protection
I know the XS/Max/XR are available, but the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are both cheaper and still great phones. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus have glass backs to help with wireless charging, so you know what that means. This investment needs protection and a good case is a must.
They're a touch larger -- we're talking fractions of millimeters -- than the iPhone 7 line, which means a lot of older iPhone 7 and 7 Plus cases won't fit them.
Yes, some softer, more pliable iPhone 7/7Plus cases will fit the iPhone 8/Plus, but we've only included cases in this roundup that officially fit the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.
Editors' note: This gallery was originally published on Sept. 22, 2017. It is updated periodically to make sure case options remain current.
OtterBox Universe
OtterBox's Universe Case System looks a lot like some of its other iPhone cases. But the Universe is special.
Designed to work with a host of accessories from partner companies -- everything from credit card readers to camera lenses to memory expansion modules and battery packs -- OtterBox calls it a mobile accessories platform.
This one is also compatible with the iPhone 7/7 Plus.

The OtterBox Symmetry Series is the company's most stylish case and is both fairly slim and protective. It's similar to Speck's cases, which certainly influenced OtterBox's design. It comes in a variety of color options.
This case is compatible with the iPhone 8 and iPhone 7. Or a larger version will fit the iPhone 8 Plus and 7 Plus.

Sena Wallet Book
Sena makes some fairly pricey, luxurious looking leather cases for iPhones, and it brought several of its case lines to the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. I like its Wallet cases but beware that some of the ones with thicker backs may not support wireless charging with the case on.
The Magnetic Flipper has minimal storage space for cards, but it should allow for wireless charging.
Spigen Neo Hybrid
Another popular slim case from Spigen. The Neo Hybrid comes in a few trim color options.
The earlier iPhone 7 version will not fit the iPhone 8 but this slightly altered "second-generation" version fits both the the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8. Also available for the Plus.
Tech21 Evo Check
Tech21 has a full assortment of cases for the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, including the Evo Check, Evo Wallet, Pure Clear and Evo Check Evoke.
Nomad Leather case
Nomad's Leather/Clear is an interesting two-tone case. It's includes a patch of genuine Horween leather that's supposed to wear in well, darkening up a bit with a nice patina.
Nomad also makes a folio case that's quite nice.
Both of these Nomad cases also fit the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.

Vaja cases
Argentina-based Vaja makes some sweet leather and vegan leather cases, although they're pretty pricey. I like the Grip case (pictured), which comes in several colors and textures, and the more expensive Wallet Agenda folio case.
Urban Armor Gear cases
Urban Armour Gear (UAG) is bringing its full line of cases to the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.
I personally like the Plasma, which features a translucent design in a few color options, and the Metropolis, which is a folio case with a slot for storing credit cards and cash (the Trooper also has a card holder). The extra-tough Monarch Series is the current top-of-the-line.
IOM Cases Extreme GT
IOM Cases, which makes one of the slickest metal cases I've encountered, says its case design is inspired by its founders' passion for exotic, high-performance supercars.
The cases are made out of aerospace-grade, non-magnetic stainless steel and have multiple layers of custom paint and specialized coatings with a soft-touch polycarbonate trim and inner lining. The "Coolmesh" design on the back is supposed to give your iPhone some breathing room and "keep it running cool."
The case pictured here is the Extreme GT Exotic Blue. It's available in several color options and is backward-compatible with the iPhone 7, 6S and 6.

The Picadilly is Gear4's translucent case and also features a lining of the company's special 3DO shock-absorbing material.
The case comes in several color options. The gold is shown in this photo.
Gear4 Mayfair
Gear4's Mayfair seamlessly blends leather with TPU plastic and is one of the nicer -- and more elegant looking -- slim cases you'll find that's also protective, thanks to an inner lining of 3DO impact protection material. It's backward-compatible with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.
Moshi Vesta
Moshi has always made nice iPhone cases, and it has several models for the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, ranging from $45 to $55. Its Vesta case has an eye-catching twill pattern and comes in three color options.

Incipio Reprieve Sport and Octane cases
The Reprieve Sport on the left is a translucent case with a colored bumper and reinforced corners (it's drop-tested to 12 feet) while the Octane on the right is a slightly less rugged case with a ribbed bumper for a better grips.
They're both available in multiple color options.

Handl case
The Handl case has a built in retractable "handle" that allows you to hold onto your phone without fear of dropping it. The handle also converts into a kickstand to prop up your phone for FaceTime and Skype calls. There are several versions of the case to choose from.
Griffin Survivor Clear Wallet
Griffin is known for its tough Survivor series cases (it's got several for the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus), but in recent years it's expanded the line to include slimmer, sleeker cases.
